Our Story

The History of Lichty Brothers, Inc.

Lichty Brothers, Inc. was originally founded by two brothers, Milton and Martin Lichty in 1941. The two brothers quickly outgrew their first location, a simple barn, and built their first shop nearby to their house in the small town of Terre Hill. The shop in Terre Hill was constructed as a two-floor building and housed the auto body portion of the business on the bottom floor, with the mechanical side of the business on the upper floor.

New Beginnings

Business did not continue for long in Terre Hill, however, because only a few years later the two brothers decided to move to a new location. A new building was constructed only minutes away along present-day Rt. 625 in East Earl, with an entirely different design. As the new body shop in East Earl was planned, the Lichty’s designed an entirely different layout. While the old building had a single door leading in and out of the building, the new shop would have a separate door for each bay. In addition to the layout change, the new building featured an in-floor heat system, relatively unconventional for the time.

As the Lichty Brothers progressed through the following years, several changes continued to take place. The first generation passed the business along to the second generation and a new era of the business arrived. Robert and Ronald Lichty (sons of Milton Lichty) purchased the business from their father and uncle. They continued to operate, with Robert handling the office functions, while Ronald painted and did bodywork.

New Ownership

In 2001, future owner, Luke Miller started working for the business as an entry level tech assistant and prep boy. Without wasting much time, he quickly became the painter and also moved in to a body tech role.

A few years later, Robert was ready to retire from the business and asked Luke and Larry Horst to assume his shares. So, in 2004, Luke and Larry Horst (grandson to Milton), along with Ronald, became the new owners of Lichty Brothers. Current owner, Landon Horst, started working for the business in 2005 as a technician assistant.

An Industry of Change

In an industry that is constantly changing, the pressure is always on collision repair shops. To maintain relevancy, but also to stay ahead of it’s time, many changes to the building and business occurred in the years following.

In 2012, the need came for Landon to transition from body tech to an office role, as well as estimator. The shop grew by leaps and bounds, from having just 3 full time employees in 2004, to more than 10 full and part-time employees in 2016.

In the Fall of 2017, Ronald was ready to step out of his role as majority owner and pass it on to Luke. 2017 continued to be a year of change, when the opportunity arose for a second location to open up in Ephrata, PA. The new location was very well received in the community and grew very quickly. The need to expand the Lichty Brothers team grew. In present day, there are almost 20 employees between both shops.

July of 2018, a new chapter was started when Larry decided it was time to sell his shares to his son Landon (great grandson of Milton). Both Luke and Landon, are looking forward to what this new partnership means for the future of Lichty Brothers.
